At Connemara Organic Seaweed our mission is to provide hand harvested, sustainable, kelp and seaweed products for human consumption through edible products and through our range of beauty products. Having a positive impact on our community and our environment is at the core of what we do.
We aim to show people how easy and enjoyable it can be to incorporate seaweed into our diets on a regular basis. We do this by providing recipes at our website which can be easily incorporated into your weekly menus. We have also included recipes that are suitable for healthy children’s lunch boxes and don’t worry they won’t taste like seaweed!
One of the most important benefits of consuming seaweed is the essential minerals it contains. A lack of essential minerals in our diet has been caused by many factors including modern chemical farming, depleted minerals in our soils and an over-consumption of processed foods. This has led to mineral deficiencies in our diets. Consuming seaweed regularly is an excellent way to ensure we are ingesting enough of all the minerals we need for optimum health.
Some of the essential minerals and trace elements that are found in seaweeds include boron, calcium, chloride, chromium, cobalt, copper, fluoride, iodine, iron, lithium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, selenium, silicon, sodium, sulphur and zinc. Different species of seaweed contain varying amounts of each.
Two of the most important minerals we need to support proper functioning of our nervous system, heart, kidneys, muscles and for support in regulating our blood pressure and blood sugar levels are potassium and sodium. Most western diets contain too much sodium and not enough potassium so we have looked for ways to incorporate these two essential minerals in correct ratio and in moderation in our recipes. Like with all things in life, moderation and balance is required in our diet so small amounts taken with each meal provide maximum benefit.
Another huge benefit of adding seaweed to our diet is for its ability to speed up bowel transit time and thereby preventing constipation, bloating and flatulence so it is excellent for our gut health.
Seaweed also has anti-inflammatory properties.
We have also produced a skin care range where we have infused our locally harvested seaweed in oil to produce high quality, organic products which offer nutrients to our skin. You can check out our website for details of our range.
We have a range including body butter, body scrubs, foot scrubs, hand and nail creams and a seaweed foot bath.
